Actor Gael Garcia Bernal will also attend opening night ceremony.
The Morelia International Film Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary next week with an opening-night screening of Pablo Larrain‘s critically-acclaimed drama No.
Festival organizers announced on Thursday that Chilean director Larrain will attend the festival, as will lead actor Gael Garcia Bernal.
A fact-based drama about a man who helped topple the Pinochet regime in Chile, No won the Art and Essai Cinema Prize (CICAE) at Cannes earlier this year. Closing this year’s edition of Morelia, one of Mexico’s top film events, is the Wes Anderson comedy Moonrise Kingdom.
Special guests this year are Iranian helmer Abbas Kiarostami and British filmmaker Sally Potter, who will present her latest work, Ginger & Rosa.
Among some of the Mexican features making their debuts here are Carlos Reygadas’ Post Tenebras Lux (best director winner at Cannes); La Vida Precoz y Breve de Sabina Rivas, from crossover director Luis Mandoki; and Verano del ’68, from Promises co-director Carlos Bolado.
International festival favorites premiering in Mexico include David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and and Palme d’Or victor Amour.
The official competition for the Mexican documentary section looks particularly strong this year with screenings from some of the nation’s most talented filmmakers, such as Pedro Gonzalez Rubio’s Inori, Juan Carlos Rulfo’s Carriere, 250 Meters, Everardo Gonzalez’s Cuates de Australia and Eugenio Polgovsky’s Mitote.
The weeklong fest runs from Nov. 3 through Nov. 11.
