Ricardo Darin starrer “Chinese Take-Away” has broken 2010 and first half 2011 box office records for a Latin American film in Spain, grossing €398,051 ($565,232) over its first weekend in Spain.
According to Rentrak, the figures are the biggest trawl for any Latin American title in Spain since Juan Jose Campanella‘s U.S. Academy Award winner “The Secret in Their Eyes,” which also top-lined Darin and grossed $1 million in September 2009.
The Spanish release was a crucial test for “Chinese,” marking its first territory opening after its March 24 bow in native Argentina.
Sold internationally by Latido Films and budgeted at $1.2 million, “Chinese” bowed on 114 screens in Spain on Friday via top arthouse distrib Alta Films.
Landing fifth in the Spanish charts, the “Chinese” screen average — $4,958 — was second best for the frame and an excellent figure for an adult-targeted intimate tragicomedy.
“Chinese” is produced by Buenos Aires’ Pampa Films, Madrid’s Tornasol Films and Argentine broadcaster Telefe.
Helmed by Sebastian Borensztein (“The Die Is Cast”), “Chinese” topped the B.O. in Argentina for two weeks, ahead of “Mars Needs Moms,” and scored $4.4 million through June 12.
” ‘Chinese’ has seen a large success in Argentina, a good launch in Spain and touches contemporary issues,” said Toni Gomez at Catalonia’s Acec multiplex chain.
Other bookers, however, were more surprised by its B.O.
“Darin’s promotion, the trailer and the appropriate dating (of the release)” helped B.O., said Enrique Gonzalez Kuhn, acquisitions head at Alta Films.
