Brazil has discovered Philippine cinema.

After Fribourg (Switzerland), Paris (France), Pusan (South Korea), Vladivostok (Russia) and Thessaloniki (Greece), three cities in Brazil are mounting a retrospective of Filipino films.

Discovering Filipino Cinema” screens in São Paolo (ongoing until June 27), Rio de Janeiro (June 29-July 15) and Brasilia (ongoing until Aug. 1) and features at least 32 movies, full-length and shorts, said Arleen Cuevas who produced five of the titles (“Independencia,” “A Short Film About the Indio Nacional,” “Now Showing,” “Manila” and “Adela”).

“It’s a good showcase for RP cinema and a way to start a meaningful dialogue between Brazilian audiences and Filipino filmmakers,” Cuevas said.

Filmmaker Adolf Alix Jr., who has two movies on the list (“Adela,” “Manila”), agreed. “There are very striking similarities between our two countries. Hopefully, the Brazilians will get a feel of Filipino life through our films.”

Half in jest, filmmaker Khavn de la Cruz quipped, “What took the Brazilians so long?” He recounted that his “film-less films,” specifically the digital feature “The Family That Eats Soil” and a retro of his short films, were shown in São Paolo five years ago.
