Calgary Latin Wave Film Festival – the collaboration project

A new film festival is hitting Calgary! Yay! I love film festivals, especially ones that feature foreign films. This one — the Calgary Latin Wave — features eight films from six countries across South America.

The Festival is, actually, a multi-city collaboration:

An Argentine arts organization — Fundacion Proa — organized it; the Toronto International Film Festival‘s Diana Sanchez programmed it; and the Calgary International Film Festival‘s (CIFF’s) Brenda Lieberman is coordinating it.

“There are so many contemporary films from Latin America that premiere at Cannes, Toronto, Berlin. We can never fit as much great Latin American film as we want to into the Calgary International Film Festival,” says Lieberman.

“We (CIFF) thought it was a really great project to get behind,” she adds.

Lieberman says there is a broad range of films on the bill, ranging from comedies, to dramas, to thrillers, even one documentary.

The Festival’s centrepiece film is The Secret in Their Eyes, which won this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Cuban film Horn of Plenty is a quirky comedy about a village of people who think they are related to someone who left a large inheritance, and they set out to claim their portions.

The Wind Journeys tells the story of a young boy who wants to be the apprentice of an established accordion player. The boy follows him across the Colombian countryside, trying to persuade him to be his mentor, as the accordion master, depressed after the sudden loss of his wife, plans on returning his accordion to its original home.

There will also be a guest appearance by a Colombian actress starring in Crab Trap, a film exploring the traditional lifestyles of the black communities on Colombia’s Pacific Coast.

The Latin Wave Film Festival takes place at The Uptown from June 11-13. Tickets are available at the door.
