“Cabeca a Premio” by first-time director Marco Ricca was named best film at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival, held at the Landmark theater in West Los Angeles from Tuesday-Sunday

Ricca, a longtime leading man in Brazilian film and TV, had company in the category, as more than half of the directors competing at the third annual fest were considered first-timers.

Winning best director honors was Henrique Goldman for “Jean Charles,” based on the 2005 death of Brazilian Jean Charles, who was shot and killed by London police after he was falsely accused of being a terrorist.

“The Man Who Bottled Clouds,” directed by Tatiana Issa and Rafael Alvarez, and “DZI Croquettes,” by Lirio Ferreira, shared the award for best documentary.

“City of God” director Fernando Meirelles, who presided over the festival’s jury, said he thinks the inclusion of so many new directors is indicative of a growing “new generation of Brazilian filmmakers.”

Organizers of the festival, which commemorated the 15th anniversary of the New Brazilian Cinema, said government encouragement, local growth and foreign interest are responsible for the revival. In 2009, Latin America’s largest country produced more than 90 films, up from about 10 films a year in the 1980s and ’90s.
