“Cinco dias sin Nora” garnered seven statuettes at Mexico’s Ariel film awards, including Best Picture, Best Debut Work and Best Original Screenplay, while star Fernando Lujan picked up Best Actor honors.

Veteran filmmaker Carlos Carrera’s “El traspatio” was the second most acclaimed film at Mexico’s equivalent of the Academy Awards, taking home five prizes, most notably Best Director.

The prizes, awarded annually by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, were given out in a ceremony at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Nezahualcoyotl auditorium.

The other Ariels conferred on “Nora’s Will,” directed by Mariana Chanillo, were Best Supporting Actress (Angelina Pelaez), Best Original Music and Best Makeup.

The film begins with the suicide of Nora, whose husband must cope with the difficulties involved in having her buried, the deceased’s Machiavellian plan and the appearance of a photograph that will change everything.

Besides the Best Director award, “Backyard” won Best Art Design, Best Sound, Best Actress (Asur Zagada) and Best Photography.

“Conozca la cabeza de Juan Perez” , directed by Emilio Portes, also fared well in the 52nd edition of the Ariels, taking home four prizes.

The big loser of the night was “Norteado”, a movie about Mexican migration to the United States by first-time filmmaker Rigoberto Perezcano, which was nominated for 10 Ariels but took home only the Best Editing prize.

During the ceremony, the president of the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, Pedro Armendariz, called for a new law to make it easier for Mexican films to be seen by moviegoers.

“The Mexican public doesn’t go out and see Mexican cinema,” he lamented in his opening address.

Armendariz called on the film community to get behind a proposal for a new film law that eliminates the disadvantages Mexican films suffer in their homeland, where Hollywood fare increasingly dominates.
