The documentary “Ave Maria” and the feature film “Lisanka” are the Cuban films in competition at the XXV Guadalajara International Film Festival, to be held from March 12th through the 19th in Mexico.

Ave Maria, directed by Gustavo Perez, was nominated in the Ibero American documentary section, and it already won the Sara Gomez award at the XXXI Havana Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

This film, with a script by Oneyda Gonzalez, Wilfredo Perez’s and editing by Yohan Wilcox, the film tells stories of the inhabitants of El Cobre town, whose lives are directly related to the shrine of La Virgen de la Caridad (Our Lady of Charity) Cuba’s patron saint, built in that locality of eastern Santiago de Cuba.

The other film in competition, Lisanka, by the filmmaker Daniel Diaz, aspires to win the award in the Ibero American fiction section.

Diaz’s film was produced in collaboration between Ibermedia and Mosfilm, and it is inspired in the story “En el kilometro 32”, by Francisco Gonzalez, and tells a story of love and indifference at the time of the October Crisis, reported Juventud Rebelde newspaper.

Well-known Cuban director Gerardo Chijona managed to include his “Ticket to Paradise” among the six participants of the Guadalajara Builds event, designed to facilitate the conclusion of Latin American films, which once shot, face post-production difficulties.

There are many prizes to be awarded in this category for the completion of the chosen feature films, the festival’s official sources announced.

Cuba has maintained extensive presence in the various editions of the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

In 2009, organizers of the event paid tribute to the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry for its 50th birthday, with screenings of films by leading directors, such as Humberto Solas, Tomas Gutierrez Alea, Santiago Alvarez, Mirtha Ibarra, who is also an actress.
