Brazilian Carnaval Cultural 2010 in Santa Barbara

The seventh annual Brazilian Carnaval Cultural will take place in Santa Barbara, Calif., this weekend, Feb. 19-21. The festival features three different events intended to spotlight Brazilian culture in Santa Barbara County via art, film, lectures, dance and music.

The lead event, taking place today Friday at 7 PM at the Santa Barbara Central Public Library/ Faulkner Gallery, includes a screening of the documentary/drama film ‘Foliar Brasil,’ directed by Carolina Paiva, and lectures by UC Berkeley socio-cultural anthropology professor Hannah Jacobs (focusing on her experiences living in the Para State/Amazon Region) and Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival founder Meire Fernandes (discussing the diversity of Brazilian culture and the new Brazilian cinema).

On Saturday at 9 PM the Carnaval Bowl Fiesta takes place at So-Ho club and restaurant, featuring the Afro-Brazilian band Mariano Silva & Prakantar and other musical performers, plus choreography performances by Raiz Brazil Dance Company and a Brazilian art exhibit.

The final day of the festival features a Family Culture Carnaval at Timbers Supper Club, a performance by Campbell Hall High School’s 12-piece Samba Ensemble, Samba Feather dancers, an Afro Brazilian show by Capoeira Batuque SB and Soul Brasil friends, Brazilian Culinary Delights and a special Street Soccer Goal Competition” for kids.
