IFFI prizes also go to ‘Brand New,’ ‘Other Bank.’

Taiwan film “No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti” (I Can’t Live Without You) won the top prize at the 40th International Film Festival of India on Thursday.

Directed by Leon Dai, the film about a father who battles to keep custody of his daughter, won the Golden Peacock award and a cash prize of 4 million rupees ($86,500) at the closing ceremony of the 11-day film festival in the tourist haven of Goa.

“No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti” is Taiwan’s contender for the foreign-language Oscar and was the top prizewinner at the past weekend’s Golden Horse awards in its native Taiwan.

The Goa jury, headed by Brazilian director Joao Batista de Andrade, praised the film for being a “poetic and realistically designed” depiction of a father-daughter relationship.

“The jury would like to emphasize the quality of every technical department in the film as well as its outstanding interpretation,” Andrade said in the citation.

Georgian film “The Other Bank,” about a 12-year-old boy who embarks on a dangerous mission to find his father, won the Silver Peacock prize and a cash award of 1.5 million rupees.

The Best Director trophy went to Korean filmmaker Ounie Lecomte for “A Brand New Life,” a tale of a young girl who has to get used to life in an orphanage.

Nearly 300 films were screened at the film festival in Goa, often referred to as India’s Cannes for its mix of world and Indian cinema.
