Brazilian Film Festival – Vancouver
Documentaries, features, and animated short films are part of this year’s Brazilian Film Festival July 8-12.
Vancity Theatre screens all the films, which include the documentaries Cinderellas, Wolves and One Enchanted Prince, about Brazilian sex tourism; Enchanted Word, a journey through Brazil’s musical past; and Favela on Blast, which shows the subculture of the music style funk carioca.
Among the features are Romance, a love story between a director and actress; If Nothing Else Works Out, about an out-of-work journalist who resorts to crime; and Veronica, which opens the festival. In it, a public school teacher’s life is changed when a student is left behind after school hours. Unfortunately, none of the animated shorts–among them “The Island,” “Dwellers of the 304” (based on a poem by Carlos Drummon de Andrade), and “The Dwarf That Became a Giant“–appear to be about cats. A shame, really.
