As alter egos go, they don’t come much more twisted than Coffin Joe, the diabolical bogeyman from the mind of cult Brazilian film-maker José Mojica Marins. Part Nietzschian nihilist, part symbol of Brazilian patriarchal politics, Coffin Joe is a truly vile horror antihero, a long-taloned undertaker whose primal quest to sire the "perfect" child saw him splatter the blood of countless women. Despite the bloodshed, he somehow keeps audiences unsure as to why they can’t hate him without loving him a little bit as well. The ever-resourceful Marins, grew up in a movie theatre, and raised funds for his first film by lying in the road and convincing passing cars to donate cash, or run him over. Now he finally completes his trilogy after two Coffin Joe films in the 1960s, with new film Embodiment Of Evil.
