The Cinema Guild has acquired veteran documentarian Agnès Varda’s “Cinevardaphoto,” a trio of short films that examine the photographic form, for a home video and Video On Demand release, the group said Wednesday. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey, Director of Distribution for The Cinema Guild with Cecilia Rose for Cine-Tamaris. The release date for the DVD has been set for August 31, 2010.

The Cinema Guild released Varda’s “The Beaches of Agnes” earlier this year.  “Cinevardaphoto” received its theatrical premiere in March 2005 at New York’s Film Forum.  The triptych is made up of the following films (descriptions provided by The Cinema Guild):  “Ydessa, The Bears and Etc.” (2004, 43 min.), about a haunting exhibit of thousands of found photographs from the early 20th century, each including a teddy bear; “Ulysses” (1982, 21 min.), a reflection on an early photograph taken by Varda; and “Salut les Cubains”(1962, 28 min.),  an exuberant work using still images to capture the spirit of the Cuban revolution’s early days.  The DVD will also include six short films previously unavailable in the US.

“We’ve always been amazed at how few of Agnes Varda’s films were available in the US given the length and breadth of her career,” commented The Cinema Guild’s Ryan Krivoshey in a statement. “So we’re hoping to rectify this injustice, beginning with this DVD release.  We’re also thrilled to continue our partnership with Agnes and her production company Cine-Tamaris.”
